FD/FMM Department organized a student field tip to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum yesterday on 28 Nov 11. Our students were inspired by the "Fashion Visionaries" exhibition which will last until 12 March 2012. For those who are interested, visit and get inspired!

The “Fashion Visionaries” exhibition is organized by the Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association (HKFDA) and The Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Showcasing the amazing work of iconic Hong Kong designers, film art directors, fashion photographers, illustrators and young fashion designers, as well as photos and information of models, the exhibition is accompanied by a series of fashion parades and education activities. Exploring the development of Hong Kong’s fashion design industry, it also represents an excellent outlet for promoting Hong Kong’s diversified culture, our distinguished design achievements and our position as Asia’s world city.

The launch of Raffles Privato yesterday at Singapore’s premier luxury lifestyle mall, Paragon, marks the birth of a brand new retail concept in Singapore. Retailing seven labels covering women’s and men’s wear conceptualised by seven outstanding RDI graduates, this incubator project showcases RDI’s talented designers and is an effort by Paragon to assist up-and-coming designers in support of the local fashion industry, particularly home-grown labels and brands with good marketability potential. In a year-long collaboration between Paragon and Raffles Design Institute, RDI students studying Visual Communication, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing and Management were tasked to design Raffles Privato’s logo and store layout. RDI students will also be involved in the day-to-day running of the store.

Raffles Privato is set to inject new blood to the local fashion scene and stimulate more demand for “Made in Singapore” fashion labels. At the same time, Raffles Privato serves as a platform to nurture young talents for the local and regional fashion retail market.

Fashion Season at Orchard

A recent graduate of RDI, Ms Michelle Liu. In conjunction with Fashion Season@Orchard as Orchard Road in Singapore celebrates fashion with French car-maker, Peugeot, Ms Liu has been selected to design a “skin” for a Peugeot car, the Grand Prize of a lucky draw. Ms Liu will be drawing inspiration from her graduation collection to design the motif to be applied on the car.

Raffles Designers at the Triumph Inspiration Award 2010, with all twelve finalists representing Raffles Design Institute. Ms Grace Eliana Sugiarto from RDI was crowned Singapore’s National Winner and walked away with cash and prizes worth up to S$2000 as well as an all expenses paid trip to represent Singapore in the International Final of the Triumph Inspiration Final 2010, competing with twenty-seven other national representatives. This is the 3rd consecutive year that RDI has won the national finals. Past winners from RDI will also represent Singapore to compete in London this year.

Mr Jonathan Liang and Mr. Tengku Syahmi who are our current Fashion Design (Advanced Diploma) students. Both are the proud winners of Malaysia International Fashion Week (MIFA) Most Promising Designer 2009.

This is the first time the organizers have announced two winners. Jonathan also came in first place in the National I-Style KLIA competition in 2009.

Saving our Mother Earth is our world effort today. In support of this effort, the Fashion and Textile

Industries have raised the bar on producing Eco-friendly fabrics and treatments. Design labels are

also encouraging Eco-conscious fashions supporting these “green” textiles.

Raffles Millenium International Bangalore’s own Fashion Design Students Madhumita, Karishma,

and Jenifer competed against seven Designers in support of the Eco Theme. Timothy’s New York

Presents ECO FASHION FEST 2010 promoted “Save Earth” competition. All participants came from

top Design Schools all over India, including Mount Carmel and T.Johns Schools.

Our first year students’ were more than prepared and talented enough to compete with the third year

Fashion Design students. The RMI Design Team’s theme was “Elements of the Earth”. Earth, Wind,

and Fire stopped the show with eye catching Designs and Mother Earth reminded the judges and

audience that she is still beautiful. The three new designers placed second for Connectivity with the

“Save Earth” theme. In fact, Mother Earth shined so much, the model for the look, Shloka, won for

Best Model in the competition.

The RMI Bangalore family is very excited that this acknowledgement is the second for the FD

Department in 2010 so far. Ayanna Nelson, Fashion Design Lecturer, is looking forward to more

successful competitions involving the talented Designers.

Big wool wins for Raffles College graduates

Raffles College Fashion Design graduates, Gabriel Lee and Peggy Hartanto, took out top prizes at last

night’s Australian Wool Fashion Awards at Sydney Olympic Park.

Gabriel Lee won first place in the Tertiary category for his black wool cocktail dress, while Peggy

Hartanto won two prizes: first place in the Woven section with a little black dress inspired by Audrey

Hepburn and second place in the Bridal wear section. Both graduates completed their Bachelor of Design

degrees last year.

For Gabriel, the win is further recognition of his emerging talent as a designer. Last year, he won the

Raffles College Best Major Studio Project Range Award of an internship with leading Australian designer

Akira.

He has just completed the internship which he described as “a really, really great experience.” The

budding designer now has his sights set on some further international competitions in the next few

months while he looks for a job in the industry. He won $900 cash and an internship with Australian

fashion design icon Alex Perry.

Peggy wins $900 cash for her little black dress and a further $600 cash prize for her amazing bridal

gown. Awards are not new to the recent graduate who last year won first place in the Kinokuniya Digital

Art Prize; second place in the 2009 Australian Wool Fashion Awards; and was a finalist in both the

Textile Institute’s Student of the Year Awards and the ‘Little Black Dress’ category of the Tessuti Awards.

She is currently seeking work in the fashion industry.

Robert de Giovanni, Program Director of Fashion Design at Raffles College says he’s extremely proud of

his former students’ wins.

“They are both exceptionally talented,” he says. “To construct a beautiful garment from wool is a major

challenge, and for them to be recognised in these awards is a huge personal achievement and a great

career boost. I can’t wait to see what they do next,” says Mr de Giovanni.

As part of the wool fashion awards, Raffles College also provides a half-fee scholarship prize, valued at

$27,770, to study for a Bachelor of Design majoring in Fashion Design. This was won Christina Ruhno

of Pymble Ladies College.

The Australian Wool Fashion Awards are sponsored by Australian Wool Innovation Limited. The awards

are designed to showcase the use of merino wool by national and international fashion designers and

students. The competition aims to educate young designers on the quality and diversity of wool.

Miss Vicky Liu, Event Manager for Nordic Ways China (www.nordicways.com), visited Raffles

Changchun to discuss and nalize the choice of the best design proposal submitted by our graduated

VC students.

This strategic choice will a ect the whole communication of the next event organized by Nordic

Ways China in Changchun: LIDINGOLOPPET, the Chinas biggest running festival hosted in

Jingyuetan Park. In 2009 over 10000 athletes and amateurs joined the race.

Our design students Ann, Susan and Summer, who will soon start internship in Nordic Ways, will

over China and overseas.

2 of our students (as a team) were placed in the top 3 teams for “Best Design and Use of Sustainable Materials” in the annual Fashion Accessory Design Competition at WLC College in Bangalore, India. The theme was “Waste Utilisation – Eco Planet” and a total of 45 teams participated in this competition.

Raffles College graduate adds to trophy shelf

Raffles College of Design and Commerce fashion design graduate Brad McLennan has added another award to his burgeoning collection of achievements. The Allambie Heights resident took top honours at the Avant Garde gallery for student designers at the recent Fashion Exposed event at Darling Harbour.

The 20-year-old had two garments selected by the judges for entry in the new event at Australia’s largest fashion trade showcase held recently. He was judged best designer out of a total of seven entries from across the country.

The young designer won $1000 in prize money and a subscription to Fashion Trend magazine for his long, figure-hugging evening gown made from sand-washed silk. The couture piece, with detailed embroidery, took three weeks to make.

This success in front of industry professionals adds to his list of achievements after winning Spotlight’s evening wear award in 2008 and being shortlisted for the Jeans for Genes Do it With Denim charity competition last year. He has also had photo spreads in Oyster Magazine and was featured on MX newspaper’s front page.

“The Fashion Exposed event is such a big platform to be on,” says Brad. “I feel lucky to not just have won, but just being there. It’s hard to get that sort of exposure as a graduate.”

His entries were the result of his graduate collection compiled for his final year at Raffles College where he studied for a Bachelor of Design majoring in fashion.

He says his successes are in part due to the course challenging him to produce high quality work. He says the course grounded him to be prepared for his first job, as a design assistant for Bonds.

“It gives a good overview of the different areas you need in the industry. And especially with my job,” he
says. “It doesn’t teach you anything unnecessary.”

The Avant Garde judges comments were full of praise. “A well made polished look that we can all imagine on the red carpet, very entrepreneurial, with great potential.”

Katie Forrester of Stylehunter.com, a first time judge for the competition, was impressed with the standard Brad and the other winners showed.

“The level of professionalism from these young designers is amazing. From their creativity to their marketability, every aspect of their brand was well executed, proving that these young designers are ready to take on the world.”

Raffles College student a success story

The Ferris wheel of fortune just keeps revolving for Lane Cove’s Chloe Ferres.

The Raffles College of Design and Commerce graduate has just had one of her photographs published in Dance Australia’s February/March magazine. It depicts Daniel Gaudiello – a principal dancer with Ballet Australia.

This most recent success comes on the back of an award-laden 2009 for the 20-year-old, who was then in her final year of a Bachelor of Arts where she majored in photography. Chloe was a finalist in the Sydney Morning Herald’s Shoot the Chef Competition and she won both first and second place awards in the Ilford Tertiary Students Photographic Competition. Chloe also took out the People’s Choice Award in the Breast Cancer Awareness photography competition and won Raffles College’s Greg Parsons Award.

Chloe put her most recent success down to the old adage of doing what you know best. Outside of her photography, Chloe has a passion for dance and felt by combining the two it would result in more deeply felt images.

“I like to work with things I know and with what I enjoy,” she says. “Dance is a beautiful artform. The aesthetics are already there. It just relates so well to photography.”

Chloe says it is becoming harder to stand-out as a photographer with the onset of digital cameras seemingly allowing anyone to take great images.

She puts her successes of last year and of late down to wanting to overcome that. “You must challenge yourself. To have a go and strive to be better,” she says.

Another reason Chloe is striving to be better is in honour of her former teacher and the namesake of one of her recent award wins.

Greg Parsons was a project leader in Raffles College’s photography department. Sadly, he passed away suddenly last year.

“Greg was an amazing photographer,” she says. “His still life set-ups were elaborate and his attention to detail, perfect. There’s no other way to describe him. He was perfect.”

The Greg Parsons Award is an ongoing prize in honour of his dedication and professionalism towards Raffles College students.

Fashion graduate Bethany Monsted designs for "Be Enchanted Brides"

‘Be Enchanted Brides’ at Hornsby has welcomed Bethany Joy as exclusive designer of unique vintage-inspired bridal gowns. In collaboration with Bethany Joy, Rhonda Martin and Reneé Amato present a new vision for the Bridal Industry. “Our dream was to create Australian made gowns with a delicately divine vintage appeal! Very romantic,” said Rhonda.

Bethany is the perfect match designer, sharing the same dream and vision inspired by a sense of a new beginning for fashion. Producing light-weight gowns from the highest quality fabrics including 100% Silk Satin, Shantung Silk, Organza, Georgette and fine Laces and Crystals with all gowns being lined in silk, says yes to a whisper-light dress.

Rhonda says they really listened to the market. Brides-to-be were asking for longer and cap sleeves and lace, so this was incorporated into several of the dresses. All the gowns are off-the-rack and this means no waiting. The dresses can be purchased at the last minute if need be, which is rare in the local bridal industry.

RDI Mumbai has announced that three of its students have taken the top 3 placing at the Sonnets in Fabric fashion show held at the Leela Kempenski in Mumbai.

Fashion Design students, Ms Vidhi Shah, Ms Delna Nallaseth and Ms Tanya Vohra beat stiff competition from NIFT, SNDT, Women’s University, JD Institute, BD Somani and B Blunt to take first, first runner-up and second runner-up positions respectively. Ms Vidhi Shah was named “Best Student Designer 2009” and won an internship with Manish Malhotra.

Successful of Raffles Annual Christmas Party 2009

Raffles Annual Christmas Party 2009 was held successfully at Me Club in Tsim Sha Tsui on December 19th. Nearly 100 students and staff participated in this joyful event. It was an amazing night as students in different streams of study were getting to know each other.

A night filled with games, snacks, merriment and laughter, everyone seemed to be enjoying the party. With more than 20 gifts prepared by Raffles, all participants were thrilled to be called on during the Lucky Draw session, hoping to take home the Big Gift. This party also served as a medium which allowed students to mingle and play together; as they often were too occupied with school works. We are also glad to see that our staff members, including Mr. Eric Ho (school director) and lecturers, were totally into the party and dominating the games while showing their zeal and enthusiasm.

School Director – Mr. Eric Ho said, “We are glad to see that there are so many students participating in our party. I understand and believe that the all students are paying a lot of effort for the assignments and examination. Some of our students are actually studying in Raffles, while a part-time or even a full-time job. It is not an easy task and it is definitely important for our students to release stress in some ways. I always encourage our students to work and play hard. I am glad to see our students and staffs are having fun. Work and Play must be balanced and I hope all the students will enjoy a wonderful year of 2010.”

Commendations given for the commitment, quality and expertise of the College’s teaching staff

Singapore, March 5, 2009 - Mainboard-listed Raffles Education Corporation Limited (“RafflesEducationCorp” or “the Group”), the largest private education group in the Asia-Pacific region, today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Raffles College of Design and Commerce (“RCDC” or “the College”), has been commended for its commitment, quality and expertise of its teaching staff, following an audit by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (“AUQA”).

Mr Chew Hua Seng, Chairman and CEO of RafflesEducationCorp, commented: “This audit is a strong endorsement of the quality education and teaching expertise provided by the Group’s colleges. We deeply appreciate the unwavering commitment of our academic staff, who have worked hard consistently to ensure a wholesome and quality learning experience for our students.”

RCDC had requested for an early audit in order to identify strengths and areas of concerns that the College could address proactively. As a result, AUQA conducted the audit in November 2008. Being one of the first Non-Self Accrediting Institutions to take part in AUQA’s current audit cycle, RCDC was complimented for recognising the potential contribution of audit findings towards raising the quality of all aspects of its operations. As part of the review process, AUQA also visited two transnational campuses in Singapore and Shanghai, China.

The audit report showed that the combination of staff and the professional practice orientation of programmes had effectively demonstrated the strong linkages with industry. The report also commented that this is a key strength of the College. Students believed that it was this link between teaching and curriculum content that provided them with a strong portfolio of skills once they commenced work in their relevant design industry.

The audit panel also commended the quality and strong commitment of the academic teaching staff, including sessional staff, which was highlighted as another major strength of the College. Said Ms Jane Mourão, Director of RCDC: “Great teaching is the hallmark of a strong educational organisation. We have a student-centred approach here and that shows in the findings of this audit.”

Apart from the commendations, AUQA also recommended some areas for RCDC to work on, especially in the area of academic governance and how governance and management structures intersect. In line with the College’s continuing efforts to enhance its learning, teaching and research environment, RCDC is committed to implementing all the recommendations, and in some instances, has already done so.

Concluded Professor Ron Newman, Chair of RCDC’s Governing Council: “We are committed to ongoing improvement and will continue to make the necessary changes to successfully address the audit findings when we report back in 12 months’ time.”

On May 28th 2009, twelve fashion and design finalists from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and The Raffles Design Institute presented their showpieces in a fabulous catwalk show at the Triumph Inspiration Award National Final ’09, the theme being >ICONS<, at Chamber, the “heart” of the iconic Arts House.

National Winner – Ms Ada Yeong

Ada Yeong, 24, from the Raffles Design Institute,

convinced the judging panel to be the National Winner

of the Triumph Inspiration Award ’09 with the design

“Marchesa Luisa Casati” and walked away with not only

$2,000 worth of cash and prizes, but including an allpaid

expenses trip to Milan to represent Singapore in the

International Final in September 2009!

As quoted by Ada, “Winning the TIA National Final has

been a wonderful and eye opening experience for me, knowing that my creation has been

recognized by the jury panel and supporters. I am very proud to be given the opportunity

to represent Singapore in the International Final. TIA Award 2009 is a high profile event

that has helped young designers like myself to gather press and exposure, allowing more

people to know about me and recognize my creation.”

Nicole Wong, 19, from the Raffles Design Institute came in 1st Runner- Up with the design “Royal Seduction” and received $1,500 worth of cash and prizes.

Reinard Grevin, 19, from the Raffles Design Institute was awarded the 2nd Runner-Up with the design “Amelia Earhart” and received $1,000 in cash and prizes.

Our distinguished judging panel from the fields of design, fashion and media, consisting of Ms Doy Teo - Director of Triumph International Singapore, Ms Tee Hun Ching – Editor of The Straits Times Urban, Ms Grace Lee - Editor-in-Chief of Nüyou, Ms Daphne Chen – Fashion Editor of CLEO, Ms Karen Kwa – Fashion Editor of L’officiel and Mr Vaughn Tan - International Fashion Designer all agreed that Ada’s design piece deserved to be called the most inspired, and inspiring, of them all in 2009. As quoted by Ms Doy Teo, “The design is astoundingly beautiful with intricate detailing.” The judges judged all entries according to the criteria: innovation and creativity in interpreting the design theme “Icons”, individuality and uniqueness, concept, aesthetics, quality in design and execution, as well as presentation. The Triumph Inspiration Award National Final is a true spectacle of aspiring local student designers.

In addition, these three award-winning designs will be displayed at the opening of Triumph’s flagship store at ION scheduled late July 2009, along with the launch of TIA 2008’s International winning design by Midori Matsuo from Japan – “Under Skin” being sold as a limited edition set from August 2009.

Shining Star of Raffles Design Institute – Guangzhou Mr. Leo Li was awarded Bronze award at the 2009 China’s (Guangdong) University Students Fashion Week in our College’s first attempt at the Competition

On 3 June 2009, 25 students from Raffles Design Institute – Guangzhou (RGZ) and 17 other universities in Guangdong Province and Hong Kong (SAR) took part in the 2009 China’s (Guangdong) University Students Fashion Competition. The event was a showcase of fashion wear from the 25 finalists and served as a grand finale to the 2009 China’s (Guangdong) University Students Fashion Week.

2 students from RGZ were earlier selected to enter the final in the preliminary rounds. One of them Mr. Leo Li, 22, was awarded the Bronze medal. His collection themed “The Encounter Mr. Lady” impressed the judges with its unique use of leather fabrics and practical designs. This is the first time that RGZ took part in this Competition and the Award spoke volumes about our students’ capabilities and our College’s credentials.

Leo remarked after the Award presentation, “Winning the Bronze Award is a totally new surprise to me, considering that this is the first time that our College is participating in this competition. The whole experience has been wonderful and the exposure has been enriching. Credits must be given to my teachers, Susan and Sook for encouraging me to take part in this Competition in the first place. Without their help, I will not be able to win this Award.”

China’s (Guangdong) University Students Fashion Week was first held in 2006 and provided aspiring fashion design students with the opportunity to realize their dreams. The event was jointly organized by the following organizations:-

i) Guangdong Association of (Apparel & Ornaments) Industries

ii) Guangdong Fashion Designers Association

iii) Guangdong Textile & Apparel Education Society

iv) China Fabrics and Accessories Centre

The judges’ panel consists of distinguished fashion professional from China, Hong Kong and Korea and is chaired by Mr. Liu Yang, Vice-Chairman of the China Fashion Designers Association and winner of the Golden Top Award, which is the highest accolade given to a Chinese Fashion Designer. Mr. Liu commented that this year, the standard of fashion design has seen a great jump compared to previous editions. He motivated the students to continue to work hard and use this platform to market themselves, to let other people know about their design personalities and collections.

This year, more than 20,000 people attended the shows by the 18 participating colleges and universities. As China’s provincial fashion capital, this event also serves to be a platform to develop the standard of fashion design in Guangzhou and further cements Guangzhou as a fashion hub. Scores of fashion industries also take the opportunities to scout for aspiring talents.

Raffles’ student wins Kinokuniya Digital Art Prize

Raffles College of Design and Commerce Bachelor of Design student Peggy Hartanto has won the
prestigious Kinokuniya Digital Art Prize.

Ms Hartanto, who is in her third year of study at Raffles College and a Fashion Design major, won the
Kinokuniya Digital Art Prize with her work The Fatal Fruit. Ms Hartanto receives $2000 prize money courtesy of Books Kinokuniya and book publisher Thames & Hudson.

Judge Daniel Wade, of Ballistic Publishing, which produces some of the world’s best digital art books,
says: “Peggy's painting features a well-executed composition and a subdued, but very effective colour
palette drawing attention to the thematic symbols of the piece. The minimalist linear style also helps to
convey a graceful sense of movement around the figure.”

The prize attracted entries from all over NSW, including Wollongong, Newcastle and Broken Hill.
Ms Hartanto’s winning artwork has also been reproduced on the front cover of Kinokuniya’s art and
design catalogue, as featured in the current issue of Time Out Sydney magazine (issue #58). Time Out
will also interview Ms Hartanto and review her artwork.

This year, Ms Hartanto also received a second placing in the Australian Wool Fashion Awards (woven
category) for her two-piece women’s’ skirt suit.

Mr Robert de Giovanni, Head of Fashion at Raffles College, says: “Raffles congratulates Peggy on her
outstanding achievement. She has demonstrated exactly the heights students can reach when they choose to study at Raffles College.”

A New Milestone For Raffles International College

Natalie Connor, a graduate from Raffles Bangkok, has just been admitted to Parsons, New York, the world’s most prestigious art and design institution. She shares her thoughts with us, Raffles Design Institute, Bangkok

What does Natalie Connor have in common with legendary creative talents such as Tom Ford (Gucci), Marc Jacobs (Louis Vuitton) or Donna Karan? The answer is; they are all Parsons’ students. Parsons the New School for Design is widely regarded to be one of the world's most prestigious art and design institutions. Natalie Connor has just been accepted into Parsons and it is something she is extremely excited about.

We asked what kind of tertiary institute she was searching for after she finished high school in Bangkok; “I was looking for a college that offered a good variety of degrees, excellent course structure with actual industry or marketing exposure and internship with reputable industry partners. Well, Raffles was the only one in Bangkok fulfilling all those criteria.”

“Raffles is a very open institution, with lots of creative people and encouraging lecturers. I feel it’s the Best Fashion Marketing College in Bangkok, and I will recommend all my friends to join Raffles if they are interested in design”

“At Raffles the multinational lecturers touch more on the marketing and practical aspects besides fashion designing. Back in New York when I took fashion courses, it was always more theoretical and general. Besides that, there’s no other college or university that offers this in Bangkok.”

All of Raffles Design Institute’s classes are small groups. What impact does this have on the students? “The lecturers at Raffles are always encouraging and close to the students. Due to the smaller classes offered, we get very personalized attention. However the lecturers always encourage us to be more independent, proactive and confident. They helped to shape my character positively throughout my 3 years in Raffles”

So what contributed to Natalie’s success in getting into Parsons? Besides the International degree awarded by Raffles, which is recognized by American Institutions … “It’s the past experience and exposure I gained in Raffles. When I applied for Parsons, they gave me a test on branding, and I was required to write a case study. I recalled having being exposed to the branding issues of Burberry back at Raffles, and I put the whole story together. It was really the difference of having industry exposure in Raffles compared to just theoretical studies elsewhere.”

Finally when asked what her advice would be for others who aspire to join Parsons just like her, Natalie said “Hard work, constantly looking for improvement and be proactive in learning are the important attributes”

Mayy’s A-roka success!

Global brand Electrolux organises the “Design Lab” Global competition every year. Every country will have their own internal competition before the 8 finalists are picked to compete in the finals, which will be held in London this year.

This year, as part of the studio practice class, Tanarat Kongsupasiri (known to her friends as “Mayy”) entered the competition and received the 1st runner up position for

Thailand.

Mayy’s A-roka is a health monitoring system that draws inspiration from the Thai philosophy that the Kitchen is the heart of the house and that it keeps the inhabitants

healthy. A-roka is Thai for “without illness” The device monitors your health and detects anomalies as you brush your teeth through the mat on which you stand or,

alternatively, you can place your hands on the docking bay. The device will then recommend the correct diet to address your illness and may also share this information with other users who have similar problems, which is a concept derived from the Thai philosophy that sharing food will strengthen relationships.

The feedback from judges was that Mayy’s work has great depth and shows how her research was able to take the needs of a group and transform it into a designed product. We believe Mayy’s success is testament to Raffles Bangkok’s Product Design Department’s “User-Centred” design approach. Mayy will receive a monetary prize as well as significant media and industry exposure.

Akira Isogawa to attend Raffles College end of year fashion show

Noted Australian designer Akira Isogawa will be the special guest designer at Raffles College of Design

and Commerce’s end of year student fashion parade.

The gala event which showcases final year works by Australia’s freshest young design students will be

held at Carriageworks in Sydney on Tuesday, December 8. Fittingly the theme for the collections this

year will be “Japan”.

Isogawa will present the prize for most outstanding student range on the night. The prize is a two-month

internship at the Akira design studio in Surry Hills.

The graduate collections are the culmination of a packed academic year for Bachelor of Design students

majoring in Fashion Design. The show features final-year work of students from all over NSW and

international students, among them many fashion industry “faces to watch’’.

A number of 2008 graduates have made their mark since leaving Raffles College. Graduate Rachel Hunt

won the Supreme Award at the 2009 Australian Wool Fashion Awards in April with a spectacular tulipshaped

wool evening gown. Ms Hunt now works for Cue.

During the fourth Graduation Show 800 guests showed up. Among them, not only Thai celebrities but also a sizeable number of industry players came to scout tomorrow’s talents.

To contribute to make this event unique, Cartier provided an Award of Excellence to the best graduated student according their corporate commitments to Miss Wannapa Un-Thong. “The designs were creative and at the same time functional and chic” said Khun Narumol Patrathiranond, Country Director of Cartier Thailand.

RCDC’s students take 4th placing in a strong field of world class professional entries at the Flip Book Competition

RCDC Auckland reports that its students: Alex Rude’, Peni Kamakorewa and Damien Aratema, have won the 4th Place Prize in the Flip Book Competition, which was sponsored by Mukpuddy Animation Studio. The competition was open to animation studios, individuals and students, and attracted more than a hundred movie entries. RCDC NZ’s Animation Department submitted seven movies for the competition.

14 movies were selected by the Mukpuddy Animation Studio Staff members, including “Zit Zap”, the entry by RCDC NZ’s students which took 4th place. Kudos to Peni, Alex and Damien – they are the only students to win an award at this prestigious competition. The top 3 places were taken by well-established New Zealand Animation Studios. New Zealand is home to some of the best and most famous Animation Studios in the world. Movies such as the “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, “King Kong” (2005), “The Hobbit” film duology, “Underwater”, “Power Rangres”, “Avatar”, “30 Days of Night” were filmed, edited and animated in New Zealand.

This is a great win for RCDC NZ as its students competed against a world class field of professional studios and managed to secure 4th place.

RCU students produce prestigious guide to UK education

Raffles CU has announced that two of their graduates, Liu Yang and Zheng Jia (Business Administration Diploma, Class of 2006), have authored a two volume book, “Welcome to the UK-Education and Life in the United Kingdom”. Published by Peking University Press, this 800 page publication took two years to research and produce.

The two volume book is supported by several members of the Royal family, especially Her Royal Highness who is Chancellor of the University of London. The Duke of York stated: “Co-operation between the UK and China has never been more important and His Royal Highness is delighted that you are producing this book which will assist Chinese students studying in the UK”.

After graduating from Raffles CU, both Liu Yang and Zheng Jia went on to further their studies at the University of London. Liu Yang attained a Masters Degree in Public Policy and MPhil Degree in Sociology and went on to a Doctoral Degree at Cambridge University in Oriental Sociology. Zheng Jia earned a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management and his Doctoral Degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Zheng Jia is now back in China and is busy setting up his own company in Hong Kong whilst Liu Yang has remained in the UK and is the publisher and CEO of the London Global Times.

RCDC NZ would like to announce that Tamara Mapper, a student at the college, was 2nd runner up at the New Zealand Fashion Week – Sony Competition, NZ’s prestigious photography competition! Tamara is a 2nd year student pursing a Diploma in Visual Arts Level 6 (majoring in Digital Photography) and she is expected to graduate in June 2010.

Almost 100 entries were submitted from across the country, and fifteen impressive entrants have been chosen to compete at Fashion Week. Three out of those fifteen finalists were RCDC NZ students: Tamara Mapper, Lawrence Tan & Sam van der Kolk.

“The competition generated a lot of interest this year and choosing the finalists was a difficult task,” said Sam Williams, Sony Marketing Manager for Digital Imaging Products. “We are confident the group we have chosen will produce some outstanding work at Fashion Week.”

“The scores were very close but at the end of the day Marcelle was the clear winner. All the finalists have a bright future ahead of them and no doubt we will see them in the industry in the next few years, said Sam Williams, Sony Marketing Manager for Digital Imaging Products”

Malaysia International Fashion Week (M-IFW) now in its seventh year was held at the Pavilion Bukit Bintang recently. The week long event showcased the latest designs of close to 100 local and regional fashion heavyweights. Organized by the Malaysia International Fashion Alliance (MIFA), the event not only promotes professional fashion designers but also discovers upcoming young designers.

The ‘10 Rising Stars’ segment featured young designers selected from Malaysia’s top fashion academies. For every young aspiring designer who dreams of making it big, winning MIFA’s ‘Most Promising Designer of the Year’ is the surest way of being catapulted into the fashion spotlight. For the first time MIFA awarded two young designers this coveted award - Jonathan Liang and Tengku Mohd Syahmi, both from Raffles International College.

Jonathan’s collection ‘Je Suis Lupian’ was inspired by the three characters from the classic Pink Panther movie - The Thief, The Police and The Diamond. Jonathan describes it as a “merry-go-round cat and mouse game swirling in a collection”. The collection is very constructive, conceived in black, white and pink with distinctive shoulders and lapels creating new shapes and silhouettes that represent the power and edge of a swift panther-like thief.

Syahmi’s collection is a mix of ancient history and modern design. Titled ‘The Immortalis’, it draws inspiration from ancient China’s terracotta warriors and paper fans. His collection screamed tough and rock star altogether. “It’s about the women of today – strong, confident, powerful and daring at the same time”, said Syahmi. He also won a Blackberry for his miniature design displayed at the ‘Maxis Exhibitionist Gallery’.

Both designers both received a RM10,000 cash prize each for their Most Promising Designer award.

The Bumiputra Designers Association (BDA) also held it’s ‘Young Designer Search 2009’ competition with the winner announced at the BDA-MIFW Gala Night. The competition drew entries from nine of Malaysia’s fashion schools. Raffles student Lee Jinx Ying was awarded 1st prize for the BDA Young Designer Search 2009. She received a RM5000 cash prize and RM8000 worth of jewellery from Habib. Jinx collection “Kalpavriksha” boasted detailing of braid which was inspired by the Kalpavirka tree – the tree of eternal life, also known as the Banyan Tree.

Raffles Alumni, Olivia Khoo also picked up the 2nd prize for her collection.

Student Spotlight - Veronica Catuna – Talented model going to Interior Design

Veronica Catuna, growing up in Gura Humorului, Romania, a small town with a population slightly more than 10, 000, Veronica had always like design and decorations. Little did she know what the future has in store.

Blessed with a mix of talents ...and beauty, Veronica was discovered at a small local modeling contest, in which she was only an audience! At the age of 17, of course she was a bit shy to participate; nonetheless, she was the champion of the day. A champion in a small town competition leads to district; district leads to national, landed a successful career of a famed and rising model.

Up till now, modeling jobs has brought Veronica to Paris, Milan, Rome, London and all the other fashionable places around the world. As a globetrotter, she enjoys the gothic and classical architecture in the West, while appreciating ethnic and tribal design in the East. Recently, she has returned to the root of childhood love for Art and Design by enrolling in the Raffles International College’s Interior Design program.

‘Passion’ is the most cited word during our conversation with Veronica, who has a renewed determination to master the art of Interior Design. She is ascertained to use her good eye for design and acquired practical skills to create homes with comfortable atmosphere.

We asked Veronica whether she would prefer to go to Interior Design industry, or she would stay in the modeling industry, “If there is an opportunity, I would like to become an Interior Designer. My dream is to create a comfortable home for people or a luxury lounge for hotels, Veronica said.

Joined in October 2010, Jashna Partabrai is honoring her passion in Fashion by committing herself as a Fashion Design student at Raffles International College, Hong Kong.

Born in Si...ngapore, raised in Hong Kong and educated in the United Kingdom, Jashna Partabrai lives her life to the fullest. After graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from King’s College London, one of England’s oldest and most prestigious universities, Jashna did not follow the trammeled path of becoming a lawyer and ‘settling down’. Instead, she went traveling throughout Europe and backpacking in India, in curiosity of exploration.

To Jashna, Fashion is a vital passion. Even since she was young, she has been stuffing her wardrobe with all sorts of clothing items and accessories. Her favorite quote is ‘Fashions fade, style is eternal’ from Fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent.

In comparison with her study in Law, Jashna found the study of Fashion Design more uplifting, vivacious and practical. ‘In my undergraduate study, everyone was tensed up with typing or scribbling down notes,’ she recalled, ‘but in Fashion Design classes, we are just practicing to add techniques, knowledge and vision towards the path of becoming a Fashion Designer.’

Carrie Birdsall - Student from Advanced Diploma in Fashion who joined Raffles in October 2009, sees herself designing for her own line nad possibly opening a boutique in 5 years.

As a full time teacher in Hong Kong, Carrie is actually now doing the part time of Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design.

From United Kingdom, the homeland of the Beatles, and the iconic image of the Big Ben, comes Carrie Birdsall, a student who joined Raffles International College (Hong Kong) in October, is now Pursuing Education in Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design.

With a bachelor Degree in Education under her belt, Carrie is currently working as a full time teacher in Hong Kong. We wondered how she is balancing between work and study. " I have always liked design, which allows me to express my creativity!" Carrie exclaimed, " It is time-consuming to work full time and study part time, but this program is so practical and everyone mixes really well here."

Inspiried by Designers such as Marc Jacobs, Giorgio Armani, Carrie hopes to design women's wear, with a specialization in evening dresses and gowns. In 5 years, she sees herself designing for her own line and possibly opening a boutique.

With Carrie's Passion in Fashion and all the knowledge and techniques obtained from the Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design, we are confident to say that, " Carrie, you are off to a great start!"

"Raffles College student, Chloe Ferres, of Lane Cove, will be on hand to talk to prospective students on Open Day. Chloe has just won two prizes, a first place and a second place, in the Ilford Tertiary Students Photographic Competition. She won $450 cash and $100 worth of Ilford photographic paper with her first place in the Black and White Darkroom Category (for an abstract beauty shot) and second place in the Digital Inkjet Category (for a shot of the Sydney Opera House). Her winning works will be published in Ilford Images magazine for photography teachers.

Chloe is about to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Communication) majoring in photography. She says she has loved her studies at Raffles College. "It's been lots of fun. It's such a great learning environment, with small classes, and you get lots of one-on-one time with the teachers, so they pass on a vast amount of knowledge to you," Chloe says."

Hollywood comes to town for Raffles Open Day

Raffles College's annual Open Day on Saturday September 5 is shaping up to be a load of fun with a lot of Hollywood glamour thrown in.

With visual communication courses in focus, parents and their teenagers will be able to watch and take part in three different photo shoots by Raffles College students. Inspired by old Hollywood glamour, the students will emulate Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's, characters from The Wizard of Oz and Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch - it will be lights, camera, action all day long.

One of the best things about Raffles College's Open Day is the chance to speak to both design and commerce students who are attending the college right now as well as students who have finished their studies and are now working at careers they really love.

The other great thing about Raffles College's Open Day is it is great fun! Raffles International College KL's Team Noir Comes Out Tops in iStyle KLIA!

Raffles International College (Kuala Lumpur) has announced that its students, Silas Liew and Jonathan Liang, competing as a team under the name Team Noir, came out tops at the iStyle KLIA styling competition organized by the Malaysia Airport KLIA in August 2009. Team Noir beat 33 other entries from local fashion and design institutes in Kuala Lumpur to win RM4,000 in cash and prizes. The competition was part of a reality show which will be aired on TV3 in Malaysia.

Mr eNKee Nguyen, a student at the Raffles International College (Ho Chi Min City) submitted his movie production to the “International Student Film Festival Hollywood 2009 Competition”. His production titled “The 4th” has been shortlisted and he is the only successful Asian entry at the global competition.

The International Student Film Festival Hollywood offers student filmmakers from all over the world a unique opportunity to gain the recognition of film industry leaders, creating career development opportunities in their home countries as well as in the United States. The organization provides a unique venue for independent films by student filmmakers from around the world. The festival is open to students only and is judged by a panel of dedicated professional film teachers, filmmakers, writers, directors, producers, actors, distributors, agents, film critics and journalists.
